The New Driver, The Blonde Girl, and The White Boy

I’m sure by now all of us have heard the infamous new BOP, “Drivers License” by our new queen Olivia Rodrigo. Olivia is a 17 year old Disney star turned singer-songwriter. She said she’s been writing songs for years and finally get the opportunity to release her first original song through her role in Disney’s High School Musical: the Musical: the Series, “All I Want.” She received so much positive feedback from this song and that gave her the chance to release more original music separate from the Disney show. She released “Drivers License” on January 8th of this year. It is literally the number 1 song in the world right now. It’s been in this top spot since it came out, as it should! It’s a banger!

But there is so much more to the song besides the catchy melodies and memorable lyrics.

Back in late 2020, Olivia Rodrigo and her co-star Joshua Bassett were a suspected couple but neither of them confirmed any of the rumors. A week after their alleged break-up Joshua was spotted spending lots of time with another Disney star, Sabrina Carpenter. They even posted a TikTok together on Halloween dressed up as Sharkboy and Lavagirl, seen below:

Fans were not happy when they realized Olivia and Josh had broken up and he moved on so quickly to Sabrina. Soon after they broke up Olivia wrote “Drivers License” and posted a snippet on her Instagram account:

In the original video, one of the lines is “And you’re probably with that brunette girl,” but when the song was released this year the line had been changed to “And you’re probably with that blonde girl.” This is when fans began to put the puzzle pieces together and realized Josh had broken Olivia’s heart and he quickly moved on to Sabrina (she’s the blonde girl, silly). Even after fans started talking about their theories, neither Josh or Olivia said anything about the situation.

A week after Olivia’s successful release Joshua released another one his original songs, “Lie, Lie, Lie.” He has released a few of his originals already but this one has some super shady undertones and a very similar music video to Olivia’s for “Drivers License.” He wrote the song before their breakup so fans don’t think the song is about Olivia but fans still suspect that he released it to piggy back off of her success since there is drama between the two of them.

And just when you thought the drama would end there!!! Five days after Joshua’s release, Sabrina released her new single, “Skin.”

The song talks about not letting people get under your skin and not giving them the ability to hurt you. This seems innocent enough but the fans caught to subtle yet LOUD lines bashing Olivia. In response to Olivia’s blonde girl line, Sabrina’s song says “I guess blonde was the only rhyme.” GIRL, THE TEA IS STEAMING! There is also a line referencing the driving theme of Olivia’s song in Sabrina’s song with the line “Don’t drive yourself insane.” Fans immediately picked up on these references to Olivia’s song. Sabrina instantly began to receive hate for her song. She quickly took to Instagram to clear the air. She captioned a selfie with this:

Even though Olivia and Josh have stayed silent during the drama and didn’t confirm any theories, this post pretty much confirms the whole situation.

Even though the drama seems pretty real, many believe the releasing of the songs was all a PR stunt. Personally, I don’t think it was a stunt because no one had any idea that “Drivers License” would blow up like it did since Olivia was basically unknown before its release. Although, I think the only reason Josh and Sabrina’s songs did so well was because of the drama surrounding them.

Hopefully soon there will be some confirmations from Olivia or Josh to clear everything up. Until then lets just be nice and enjoy the music! Vote below your favorite song of the 3 and if YOU think it’s all just one publicity stunt, AND if you think Joshua is worth all of this drama:
